The earlier part of Alec's memoirs trace the pre-war years of his life as a reluctant solicitor: the opportunity to escape from this when he became a pilot in the R.A.F; his wartime experiences ending up on the 'Torch' campaign in North Africa, and finally how he was shot down and became a P.O.W. in Germany. At the end of the war he returned to England and was presented with his decoration at Buckingham Palace. The latter part of his memoirs tell of his complete change of occupation in 1951, when his training as a furniture maker began. The setting up of his own workshop follows, and the 40 years he spent in it, making furniture. He broke away from that for 10 years to make cellos: and finally turned back to furniture making for the last few and most rewarding yhears of his life as a fine craftsman.
